1. Check Headroom and Side Clearance

Begin with a dimensioned drawing of the opening. Include the required clear width and height, wall construction, nearby services and space for maintenance. The finished opening must accommodate the tallest and widest load that will pass through it.

2. Compare the Complete Traffic Cycle

For high speed clean room doors, the relevant performance question is how a real passage works. Opening speed is only one part of the cycle. Activation distance, the time needed to clear the opening, the hold-open setting and closing travel all affect how long the room boundary remains open.

Record a representative trolley route and a busy-period queue. Does the largest cart turn immediately after the doorway? Does a second operator keep the sensor active? Would a wider opening let the load pass cleanly, or simply leave more of the room boundary exposed?

Ask suppliers to demonstrate comparable conditions: the same clear opening, load, approach and required safety functions. This makes the comparison useful without assuming that every roll-up design cycles faster than every sliding design.

3. Separate Sealing Performance from Door Speed

A controlled environment high speed door needs a defined performance brief. Identify the pressure relationship between rooms, the expected operating conditions and any leakage acceptance criteria. Ask for evidence that applies to the offered door assembly and size.

Compare closed-door leakage separately from air exchange during passage. A door may close quickly yet have an unsuitable perimeter detail. A tightly sealed assembly may still remain open too long because of traffic or activation settings. Your ventilation team should review how the selected door fits the room’s overall air-balance design.

Specify who or what may request opening, where detection should occur and how the system confirms that the passage is clear. Include the required interfaces for carts, access control or automated vehicles where applicable.

For a two-door airlock, define the opening request, closed-position confirmation, permission for the second door and the response to a fault. Interlocking requires coordinated controls and a suitable operating procedure. Emergency access and escape arrangements also need project-specific review.

Compare the maintenance plan alongside the purchase quotation. Ask which components need inspection, how replacement parts are identified and what access is required for servicing. Include the operational cost of taking a busy doorway out of service.
